Welcome to FISHERS TECHNICAL ACADEMY
Fishers Technical Academy is a vocational training institute established in 2019 to empower Somalia’s coastal communities through skills development, innovation, and sustainable fisheries management.
About Us
Founded in response to the
urgent need for professional training in the fisheries sector, the academy was
built on the recognition that Somalia’s 3,300 km coastline—one of the longest in
Africa—remains an underutilized economic asset. With the right skills, knowledge,
and infrastructure, the fishing industry can contribute
significantly to job creation, food security, and national development.
At FTA, we bridge the gap between traditional fishing practices and modern
vocational training. Fishing has always been part of Somali heritage, but the lack
of structured training opportunities has limited the sector’s growth and
sustainability. By combining indigenous knowledge with modern technology, the
academy equips fishermen, youth, and women with the tools and expertise to
thrive in a competitive and evolving marine economy.
Our training programs are designed to be practical, hands-on, and
community-driven. We focus on areas such as safe fishing practices, boat
handling, navigation, fish processing, value addition, and marine conservation.
Through these programs, participants not only gain technical knowledge but
also entrepreneurial skills to build small businesses, cooperatives, and
sustainable income streams.
Beyond training, Fishers Technical Academy functions as a hub for marine
awareness and advocacy. We work closely with fishing cooperatives, local
leaders, and community-based organizations to promote responsible fishing
methods that protect marine biodiversity and ensure long-term sustainability.
Our initiatives include public campaigns, community workshops, and
partnerships with NGOs and government agencies focused on marine
conservation and livelihoods.
